Dear Dr. Tan,

Application for internship programme

I am a second year student of Life Science at National University of Singapore (NUS) and writing to express my desire to be attached with your organization for a 10-weeks internship opportunity.

In order to gain practical experience in a research environment and insights to graduate school options, I wish to work alongside scientists in a research laboratory, and would like to request for a vacancy as an intern in your laboratory from May to July 2009.

My research indicates that your company, Lonza, has a deep involvement in science discipline fields of biomedical science, life science and many more. I believe that it can provide an opportunity for me to be part of the research team, where I hope to use my creativity to share innovative ideas, and help bring the company to greater heights.

During my studies in NUS, I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges that my science courses have provided, particularly in the study of molecular mechanism of the immune system. I find it interesting on how immunity in our body can be induced against viruses by using some manipulative technique. I came across your laboratory while reading the article on Human Immune Complement 96 StellARray™ qPCR Array that is published by your research group.

Therefore, it has motivated me to write to you as I am eager to participate in work on a similar subject.

My internship with Lonza will allow me to fully make use of my analytical skills and reasonings learnt in the classrooms. As NUS is a research-driven school, I am convinced that the comprehensive teaching approach has equipped me with strong fundamental knowledge on biology. This is complemented by laboratory courses that I have from semester one onwards. In addition, I have also worked as a research assistant in Professor Tan Cheng Tong’s lab for 3 weeks to gain some additional experiences.

Given the chance to work in your team, I am sure that I would be able to contribute positively as my past trainings and enthusiasm for the subject can be put to good practice.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I have attached my CV for your viewing and if necessary, please call me at 93365491 to further discuss about my candidacy.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,
Emily Lee Hui Ling (Miss)

Hi Emily,

I think that your application letter was quite well done.

The positive aspects of the letter:

1) You have illustrated clearly your competence for the internship. It was impressive that you had previously worked as a research assistant.

2) You have certainly done your homework on the company. In fact, you seem to know exactly what the scientists at Lonza are currently up to.

Points to improve upon:

1) I was wondering where you got the information that Lonza currently had an opening for an internship (Journals or website?). Perhaps, you might like to add that, assuming this is not an unsolicited leter.

2) I felt that the tone of the letter was a little off.

Consider the following phrases;
"I wish to be given the opportunity ..." and
"I believe that it can provide a platform for me ... which would be beneficial mutually."

I can't quite figure it out, but it just sounds a little off to me. Perhaps you could try revising the sentences by putting the company before yourself.

Other than that, your letter was pretty good. Certainly better than mine.

You sure did a lot of homework on the background of the company and even stated the research they are currently involved in...=)

However, I felt that the cover letter is a little too lengthy. Points in the first 3 paragraph could be rephrase to give a clearer emphasis on your desire to be part of the company. Your technical skills and experience were well elaborated but soft skills such as interpersonal communication skills should also be briefly mentioned.

Overall, it was a well written cover letter. Hope you get your internship with lonza..=)

Overall a well written cover letter. You have clearly highlighted your capabilities and what did you do to differentiate yourself from other applicants. Like what mj has said, it was really good that you did a very thorough research on the Lonza. I believe this will please the readers of your cover letter.

However, I do not know how to put it but some parts of the letter just sounded a little bit off. It might be the tone of the letter. For example the line "my research indicates...", it just sounded weird.

Other than that I like your cover letter. It was definitely better than the one that I wrote when I was applying for internship with SP.

Good luck with your internship application!

It is a well written cover letter without much mistakes. However i believe there is something wrong with the tone too and should be more concise.

Good luck with your internship too.
